Mobile phone mast challenges fail
But some campaigners said they were "shocked and horrified" by the decision and would consider taking their case to the Court of Appeal.
In the first case, the Otterton villagers appealed against an inspector's decision to allow a mobile phone mast to be installed by Orange near a playground and primary school. The legal challenge was led by Jane Lee, 56, whose house is 150 metres from the proposed site of the 50ft high mast. Ms Lee, who suffers from arthritis, said: "We are a bit stunned and we are finding out about whether we can appeal - none of us have money and we have costs to pay. "If they put this mast up I will have to move. I just won't feel safe there any more. I can't love it any more."
Total disbelief'
In the second unsuccessful challenge, two children and their parents appealed against a planning inspector's decision to allow Orange to site a mobile mast near their homes and local primary school. Phoebe St Leger-Davey, aged six, of Chilbolton Avenue, Winchester, Hants, and seven-year-old James Harrison, of Poet's Way, acting through their parents, asked the judge to rule that permission should never have been granted.
But the judge ruled the inspectors had been entitled to find that the radiowave emissions fell within international guidelines. He also said there had been no procedural or legal flaw in the decision-making process.
Phoebe's mother, Caroline, said: "We are shocked and horrified by the decision. We are in total disbelief." She said she would be going to the Court of Appeal.

I think the article about chemicals was very interesting. Perhaps the explanation of sensitivity from electricity can be found in this. I tried to write 1998 an article about this and also the connection between electricity and chemicals. HYPERSENSITIVITY TO ELECTRICITY
It has not been possible to ascertain what it is that triggers off and maintains these symptoms. Therefore, a multifactorial explanatory model has been accepted whilst further research continues. Electric and magnetic fields are included in this explanatory model. Psychosocial factors and so-called "techno-stress" can also be a possible explanation in certain exceptional cases. (Ref 2) Even chemical substances (such as organo-phosphates in flame-proof substances) in electrical apparati, together with electric and magnetic fields are possible factors contributing to the symptoms described. (Ref 3) Despite a number of provocative tests, it has not been possible to determine what sort of fields trigger off the symptoms, although such tests have shown that people can register slight differences in the intensity of electric fields when switching electrical apparati on and off. (Ref 4, 5)
Referring to what has been called hypersensitivity to electricity, reports have been received describing a connection between electric and magnetic fields and risks for neurological diseases such as Alzheimers, ALS and Parkinsons, as well as certain connections to an increase in risks for asthmatic complaints. (Ref 6, 7)
Lately, a lot more attention has been given to equipment that emits high-frequency electromagnetic fields. What do we know about these fields at the present time?
What Can Individual Persons Do?
At a conference in Copenhagen in May 1995, the conclusion drawn from published reports was, that until it could be ascertained for sure what factors cause hypersensititvity to electricity, the best thing to do was to take measures to ensure less exposure. (Ref 10)
At the office, this can involve:
… reviewing work shifts in order to lessen time spent at monitors
… seeing to it that all electrical equipment are connected to protective earth
… furnishing mobile telephones with external antennas and hands-free equipment
… increasing the distance to electrical equipment that is not used regularly in ones work
… moving copying machines, laser printers and suchlike away from the user to another room if possible
… enclosing monitors in a box made of material that conducts electricity, thereby effectively reducing electrostatic fields and electrical alternating fields
… inspecting ventilation systems to ensure that gases and other chemical substances produced by office equipment are effectively ventilated from the workplace
At home it is well to think about the following:
… to increase the distance to the TV-set when watching TV
… not to use light regulating equipment (dimmers)
… to use light bulbs and not fluorescent lamps where you are working or reading
… to switch-off electrical apparatues properly when not in use - not leaving them on stand-by
… only to use portable mobile telephones briefly or to use an external antenna, thereby increasing the distance to your body, if you have to use one frequently
The experience of quite a number of companies in Sweden that have taken measures to reduce electrical and magnetic fields at their workplaces, resulting in the return of employees who were unable to carry on at work earlier, also adds to the empirical evidence showing that electrical and magnetic fields do affect humans adversely. (Ref 13, 14, 15)
Until further research on this subject shows a clear connection, the principle that applies to radiation in general and that is known as ALARA (as low as possibly achievable) should be applicable. (Ref 16)
Daily, more and more reports are being received from other countries, containing similar contents to the Swedish reports that are already 8-10 years old. In Norway, about 16% of those working at monitors complain about skin irritation. (Ref 17, 18, 19, 20)

Chernobyl radiation illnesses
Today's IRISH EXAMINER mentioned (page 8) that the Irish based Chernobyl Children's Project since Adi Roche founded it in 1990 has "delivered around 30 million [euro] worth of aid to the region and brought more than 10,000 children to Ireland on recuperative holidays." Ireland has indeed acted very generously toward Chernobyl victims and this film gives worthy tribute to that.
But there is another country, somewhat politically adumbrated, whose contribution to helping the lot of ill Chernobyl children should not be overlooked: CUBA. I would like to quote below a brief report as it appeared in THE SUNDAY TIMES, Magazine Section (June 17, 2001, page 12) on how unstinting Cuba has been to afflicted Belarussian children. (I can't include the accompanying photo of three Chernobyl children splashing happily in the sea there.) The statistics included in this also go toward rebutting those same radiation experts who dismiss claims of the nuclear accident resulting in childrens' gross deformities, and serious illnesses:
"A CUBAN RESPORT BRINGS RELIEF TO SOME OF THE YOUNGEST VICTIMS OF CHERNOBYL. BUT FOR MANY OF THEM, IT'S THE LAST PLACE THEY SEE.
These child victims of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster are being treated at the Tarara hospital, a converted beach resort near Havana, in Cuba. Alexander, centre, grins at the camera, while his best friend, Andrei, jumps into the waves. A girl (far right) throws her head back, revealing her hair loss. The programme was initiated by Fidel Castro in 1990--Russia was Cuba's closest ally at the time. Up to 15,000 children have been treated there so far. Not only do they benefit from the climate and good facilities, they also receive expert medical care. Working free of charge, doctors have performed numberous serious operations, in an attempt to lengthen the children's short life spans. The bankrupt Cuban government has footed the bill, estimated at more than £200m [million] so far. Photograph: David White."
