Dr. Pan kaj K . Gadhia is presently working as a Professor in the Department of Biosciences, South Gujarat University, Surat

His fields of interests are Human and Cancer Cytogenetics and Genetic Toxicology. Prof. Gadhia obtained his M. Sc. in Cell-Biology and Ph. D. in Radiation-Biology from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.

In 1982, Prof. Gadhia was awarded a DAAD Post doctoral fellowship to work in the field of Human cytogenetics at University of Kaiserslautern in West Germany. In1986, he was awarded a French Govt. Post doctoral fellowship to work on cancer and chromosomes in Institut Gustav Roussy, Paris, France. In addition in 1992, Prof. Gadhia was also awarded a Fulbright fellowship to work as a Visiting Scientist and joined Prof. T. C. Hsu and Pathak’s group at M. D. Anderson Cancer Centre, The University of Texas, Houston, USA. He has again visited West Germany in 1994 as a Visiting Scientist at University of Kaiserslautern. Prof. Gadhia had worked in several European cytogenetic laboratories.

Prof. Gadhia has published more than 33 peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 13 paper presentations in National as well as International Conferences. He has guided five students for their Ph.D. degree in the field of human cytogenetics. Prof. Gadhia was awarded Dr. A. R. Gopal – Iyengar Young Scientist award in 1991 for original and outstanding work in the field of radiation biology. He has several projects to his credit and very recently was awarded UNESCO –PARZOR PROJECT to work on the Parsis of India.

EMF/R effects on birds

This e-mail got me thinking [not always a good thing]. I looked in my archived studies and found three on emf/r effects on birds, from the National Research Council Canada. Amazingly they are from 1969 and 1973!

What impressed me in reading these again years later is the candour with which the authors discuss their opinions on the "known" effects. One from 1973 has a table listing "non-thermal effects" between 1 MicroWatt- 100 MicroWatts; "thermal, non-heating" from 100 MicroWatts - 10 Milli Watts; and "heating" from 10 MilliWatts and above.

The November, 1969 study by Romero-Sierra, Husband and Tanner titled “Effects of Microwave Radiation on Parakeets in Flight” concluded that "microwaves have an aversive effect on birds in flight comparable to that previously observed in caged birds. This leads the way to a possible solution of the bird hazard problem in aviation."

The next one is a compendium of studies dated 1973, author J. Bigu, titled "Interaction of Electromagnetic Fields and Living Systems with Special Reference to Birds" and includes reference to 50 studies and publications [including IEEE proceedings 1971, plus ca change!]. What is amazing is that the authors question the international safety regulations way back then, quoting Russian studies and others. It includes a condemnation of limits based on heating effects.

The other, dated January 1973, was also by Tanner, titled "Bird Feathers as Dielectric Receptors of Microwave Radiation." Preliminary findings show that feathers may act as sensors of microwave energy enabling the behaviour of birds to be controlled remotely by means of a microwave beam."

So here we are 30 years later, dealing with government and industry who admit to less knowledge than their antecedents had. How do we counter denial, and regulatory inertia?

I wish I knew. But I'll keep trying until I do.

Right on!! You guys beat me to a response on this issue with the same info I would have sent....and have sent out in the past....see additional supportive info in article and references below.

In the Austin American Statesman, Austin Texas X paper of October 8, 1998, appeared the following article:

2,000 HOMING PIGEONS LOSE THEIR BEARINGS, DISAPPEAR

Homing pigeons, as the name suggests, are supposed to find their way home. But more than 2,000 of the creatures have disappeared this week and no one can explain it.

The birds lost their way during two separate homing pigeon races held Monday. Out of 1,800 birds competing in a 200-mile race from New Market, VA to Allentown, PA, about 1,500 have vanished. And in a 159-mile race from western Pennsylvania to suburban Philadelphia, 700 out of 900 pigeons are missing.

Most of the pigeons would have been back in their lofts within a few hours. Although it's not unusual to lose a few birds during a race -- a hungry hawk, for example, might snag a few racers -- this week's loss is extraordinary, organizers of the two events say.

"There is something in the air," said Gary Moore, who was the "liberator" for the 150-mile race, deciding when and where the birds were released. "To lose this many is just unbelievable."

Was it sun spots? A UFO? The currents of El Nino?

It's hard to come up with an answer pigeon enthusiasts say, because no one knows how homing pigeons do what they do.

Moore's theory is that the disappearance may have something to do with CELLULAR PHONE ACTIVITY (my emphasis...jb). It's widely accepted that the pigeons use electromagnetic fields to help the navigate and cellular phone calls might interfere with that process, he speculated.

Most long-distance races are held on weekends when cellular phone activity is lower. But the two races in question were postponed from Sunday to Monday because of rain.

Sun spots also can send the pigeons off course, but the sun activity that day was low, organizers say.

Jim Effting, who lost 34 of the 37 birds he entered in the race to Allentown, also thinks that something very peculiar must have messed up the birds' innate tracking systems. He says the birds took a wrong turn and could be in North Carolina by now. The three racers of his that finally made it home arrived Tuesday afternoon. They were exhausted, and it was obvious they had been flying lost for hours, said Effting, who lives in Emmaus, PA.

What's certain is that with each passing day, the chances that the birds will survive are decreasing. Unlike their wild pigeon brethren, these speed machines don't know how to feed themselves in the wild and are easy prey.

Editorial Note: An interesting supporting article appeared in the proceedings of a symposium and workshop held in Snowmass-at-Aspen CO, in 1973 [1] and sponsored by the National Science Foundation in concert with the Neuroelectric Society, the International Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Marquette University and The Medical College of Wisconsin :

There is an important chapter in the Proceedings about the action of large flocks of blackbirds and starlings, where hundreds of birds all turn, in milliseconds, and NONE OF THEM COLLIDE [1]. The video shown at the conference illustrated the rapid twisting and turning as the flock few in close formation. VERY impressive...as though all were of one mind! There was no twisting or wave motion indicative of visual or auditory cues! It was theorized that the birds used some sort of proximity detection sensory system based on microwave phenomena, since the structure of bird feathers was somehow related to microwave antennae! The apparently synchronous turning and wheeling of flocks of several bird species, particularly starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), has long been a phenomena of curiosity and interest. The recent series of reports suggesting that birds may be able to detect the earth’s magnetic field makes the hypothesis that turning movements in bird flocks may be coordinated by electromagnetic means more attractive. Such a signal would be instantaneous, could reach all birds in the flock regardless of their position relative to the signal source, and could carry sufficient information for turning movements.

Analysis of films of turning flocks of birds and experimental studies of startle reaction times in birds in our laboratories have suggested that the electromagnetic radiation model could provide a parsimonious explanation for the observed behavior of the birds.

Spirit of Guy Fawkes

Thought you might like a copy of this report. Of course we cannot condone acts of vandalism or antisocial behaviour - that's why we campaign against irresponsible siting of masts and use of technology that is increasingly shown to be harmful to health. Yes, this was an illegal act -so let's hear how people can legally protect their own lives and those of their families. Let's have a system that works. People, ordinary people, only take the law into their own hands like this when the system fails them - and the system is woefully failing the people of Wishaw, Crosby and the like.

Two masts downed

(The Spirit of Guy Fawkes is very much alive)

At 12.20 a.m. on the night of November the 5th the T-Mobile mast that has caused such distress and concern to residents of Wishaw, near Birmingham (UK), was toppled by person or persons unknown. It's understood that they simply undid the retaining bolts and pulled it over.

This mast is widely believed to be responsible for a cancer cluster in Wishaw, one of the worst in the country.

A local resident was asked the next morning whether he had heard any unusual noises that night - explosions or crashes etc. He said "Yes, they were going on all through the night - it was Bonfire Night, you know". The police then said that there was a row of seats still arranged in the next field, as if there had been spectators. The man said "Yes, of course there were spectators - to the Firework Display in that next field."

Lyn Insley, a local campaigner, commented that she and her husband Steve had had the best night's sleep for ages and had no idea why. It was only on her way home from work the next evening that she noticed that the mast had gone. Though she and Eileen O'Connor (another local campaigner, who has had several operations for cancer) would not have done such a thing themselves, they are delighted and will now be working very hard to prevent it going back up. Lyn & Eileen run SCRAM -Sutton Coldfield Residents Against Masts.

Wishaw was the venue for a big Mast Health Debate earlier this year at which myself, Barrie Trower, Alasdair Philips, Gerard Hyland and Chris ? (a researcher with Roger Coghill) spoke, as well as Challis (MTHR), Clark NRPB) and a senior representative from the local Health Authority.

A second mast (believed to be 02 - not TETRA) which was put up only last weekend in Crosby, Liverpool, was brought down that same weekend - Lyn Insley suggested it must have been Spiderman, as this one was on top of a high building!
