Intervention in Libya: Is It Really the Only Option?
Stephen Zunes, Truthout: 'The decision by the United States and its Western allies to intervene militarily against the Libyan regime of Muammar Qaddafi may have averted a massacre, but it is fraught with serious risks of eventually costing even more lives. Furthermore, it could undermine the remarkable and overwhelmingly nonviolent pro-democracy movements which have been sweeping the Arab world in recent months. As will be described below, had Libyas popular uprising maintained its largely nonviolent discipline of its early days, there probably would not be the bloody stalemate and other dangers now emerging in the conflict.'

Liberal doves are feeling a deep sense of betrayal after watching their champion of peace drop bombs on an Arab country. If the war drags on inconclusively, or if Obama feels compelled to expand our involvement, their discontent will grow. Then what? Then he could face what Lyndon Johnson faced in 1968: a Democratic primary challenger appealing to those tired of war and mistrustful of their president.'

In their zeal to cut government spending, Republicans in Congress have been quoting the Constitution and hacking away at funds for National Public Radio, which saved $5 million. But if those same Republicans had seriously honored the Constitution 10 years ago, they might have saved $4-to-6 trillion. Thats the total estimated cost of Americas wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- wars that Congress putatively authorized but never formally declared. ... And now its happening again, as the US began bombing Libya without a congressional declaration - or even a single hearing or debate...

President Obama is proud of how he put together the Libyan operation. A model of international cooperation. All the necessary paperwork. Arab League backing. A Security Council resolution. (Everything but a resolution from the Congress of the United States, a minor inconvenience for a citizen of the world.) It's war as designed by an Ivy League professor...

Obamas war against Libya is my first liberal war as a resident of the USA; I was living in Canada during the Kosovo campaign. Americans may be used to waging war on the world, but this brand of Exceptionalism is a shock to the sane persons system. Most countries ? I?ve lived in a few ? do not go to war with the regularity the US does. As it was once noted, here, 'a brave nation fights because it must; a cowardly one fights because it can'...
