Meanwhile, in America ...
William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'It was a tremendous week in these United States. A segment of the population reveled in unabashed frenzy over the death of Bin Laden. A segment of the population celebrated in more restrained fashion. A segment of the population called into question the cold-blooded manner of the terrorist mastermind s dispatch, and, of course, a segment of the population simply refused to believe it had happened at all. Through it all, however, was a sense that the terrible drift we have been experiencing as a nation came to a sudden stop. Something had been done, and it felt like we were once again in control of events, instead of events being in control of us. The manner in which we arrived at the moment may have been unworthy, as some have suggested, but the facts of aftermath remain for all to see.'

Just as I suggested last Monday, the killing of Osama bin Laden isn t going to change a thing. The war on terrorism will continue, along with the invasions, bombings, occupations, sanctions, embargoes, kangaroo tribunals, torture and abuse, assassinations, indefinite detention, foreign aid, support of dictatorships, and, of course, the out-of-control federal spending and ever-growing infringements on the freedom and privacy of the American people...

Making myths in fog of war
The Boston Globe
by James Carroll
05/09/11
That the first accounts of last week s raid in Abbottabad turned out to be at variance from the facts is significant but not surprising. More than the so-called 'fog of war? was at work when the brief resistance of one gunman was characterized as a prolonged, constant, and multi-party 'firefight,? and when bin Laden himself was described as firing back and using his wife as a human shield. It soon became known that bin Laden was unarmed, and that, while being rushed, he did not even avail himself of weapons near at hand. The discrepancies gave the Obama administration a perceptions headache of its own making, prompting some to ask whether the killing of bin Laden amounted to extra-judicial assassination...

The Targeted Assassination of Osama Bin Laden
By Marjorie Cohn
Targeted assassinations violate well-established principles of international law. Also called political assassinations, they are extrajudicial executions. These are unlawful and deliberate killings carried out by order of, or with the acquiescence of, a government, outside any judicial framework.
