Can Americans Be Unplugged?
The ongoing bin Laden saga
By Paul Craig Roberts
Has anyone independent of Washington examined the alleged bin Laden diary and confirmed that it was in bin Laden s handwriting? These kind of questions are the kind the media, back when we had one, used to ask.

Assassination nation: Are there any limits on President Obama s license to kill?

How much evidence should the US government be obliged to show before it kills an American citizen? None, according to the Obama administration. And how much evidence should the government be obliged to possess of an American?s wrongdoing before officially targeting them for killing? That?s a secret, according to the Obama team. As part of its war against violent extremism, the Obama administration now claims a right to kill Americans without a trial, without notice, and without any chance for targets to legally object. On May 6, the US government launched a drone attack to try to kill a US citizen in Yemen...

The Christian Science Monitor published a piece I wrote last month in opposition to allowing the U.S. government to kill Americans without a warrant, trial, or any judicial niceties. The hunt for Osama bin Laden was always a sideshow. President George W. Bush even said at one point that he wasn t much concerned with finding him. He probably meant it. Still, bin Laden played a useful role for the U.S. foreign-policy elite: he was still out there plotting, necessitating a vigilant 'war on terror.' And if he were eventually caught and killed, whoever was occupying the White House would score a point with the American electorate. Now it has been done. What s next?

It is clear what the US wanted to achieve; to sell the story of a menacing and capable terrorist leader and his organisation to justify the raid to Western audience and to make bin Laden seem contemptible in the eyes of Muslims. It has achieved neither end as the multiple protests against the nature of the raid and bin Laden s killing show and the outraged response of radical Muslims. The credibility of the propaganda was further eroded by the ineptitude of the bewildering number of alterations in the story told by Washington.
