Over 160 Arrested in Ongoing Civil Disobedience Against Keystone XL Tar Sands Oil Pipeline
Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: 'Fifty-two environmental activists were arrested Monday in front of the White House as part of an ongoing protest calling on the Obama administration to reject a permit for the 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline project, which would deliver Canada tar sands oil to refineries in Texas, and rather focus on developing clean energy. An estimated 2,000 people have signed up to hold sit-ins and commit other acts of civil disobedience outside the White House everyday for the next two weeks - 162 have already been arrested since Saturday. Also joining the protest are indigenous First Nations communities in Canada and landowners along the Keystone XL pipeline s planned route. An editorial in Sunday s New York Times joined in calling on the State Department to reject the pipeline, noting that the extraction of petroleum from the tar sands creates far more greenhouse emissions than conventional production.'

With 595 Arrested, Pipeline Protests Heat Up
Britney Schultz, Truthout: 'It is now day 11 of the protests in Washington, DC, against the Keystone XL pipeline, and according to Tar Sands Action, 595 people have been arrested so far for their participation. Environmental author and activist Bill McKibben has called the demonstration 'the largest civil disobedience action in the environmental movement in a generation,' and notes that it is not only the 'usual suspects' who are participating.'

It s Time to Take Sides: Why I'm Protesting the Tar Sands Pipeline
Robert Naiman, Truthout: 'The key political fact about the proposed Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico is this: at the end of the day, the decision of whether to approve the permit for the pipeline or not will be a political decision wholly owned by President Obama. The final determination on the permit will be based on whether approval would be in the 'national interest' of the United States. This is an inherently political determination. By denying the permit for the pipeline, President Obama can take a concrete action against climate chaos without securing one Republican vote, without spending one tax dollar, without getting approval from the Tea Party.'
