My Guantánamo Nightmare
By LAKHDAR BOUMEDIENE
I went on a hunger strike for two years because no one would tell me why I was being imprisoned. Twice each day my captors would shove a tube up my nose, down my throat and into my stomach so they could pour food into me. It was excruciating.

Guantanamo detainees? bleak future
CNN
01/08/12
Ten years after the arrival of the first prisoners captured by U.S. forces after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will likely be in business for many more years, perhaps decades, to come, analysts say. For the 171 detainees still there, the future is bleak. GITMO, as the detention facility is commonly known, would have been emptied two years ago under a proposal introduced by President Barack Obama...

Before the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, there were only two ways of holding prisoners, either they were prisoners of war, protected by the Geneva Conventions, or they were criminal suspects, to be charged and subjected to federal court trials. That all changed when the administration of George W. Bush threw out the Geneva Conventions, equated the Taliban with al-Qaeda, and decided to hold both soldiers and terror suspects as 'illegal enemy combatants' who could be imprisoned indefinitely without charge or trial, and with no rights whatsoever...

The evil of indefinite detention and those wanting to de-prioritize it

As we head into Election Year, there is an increasingly common, bizarre and self-evidently repellent tactic being employed by some Democratic partisans against those of us who insist that issues like indefinite detention (along with ongoing killing of civilians in the Muslim world) merit high priority. The argument is that to place emphasis on such issues is to harm President Obama ...

Peter Weiss, Truthout: ''Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) was the first legal organization to perceive the danger which the legal culture of Gitmo posed to the idea of justice and to take on cases on behalf of detainees.... About 600 detainees have been released and sent to their home countries or other countries willing to accept them, partly as a result of CCR attorneys scouring the world for such countries.''

Jason Leopold, Truthout: ''A former Guantanamo guard ... reflects on a decade of lawlessness.... Neely did not know it then, nor did the public, but a vast majority of the prisoners who populated Guantanamo during the prison s first year in operation were innocent bystanders sold to US forces for hefty bounty payments or were captured and sent to Guantanamo because they wore the same style Casio watch that members of al-Qaeda wore.''
