By Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers
There is very little doubt that the U.S. government intends to maintain effective military control over Afghanistan by one means or another, either through a client state with military bases, and support for what they ll call Afghan troops.

Top American officials in Afghanistan say the U.S. military intends to maintain a troop presence here beyond a 2014 deadline for Afghan troops to take over. Marine Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said the Taliban and other forces in the region need to know the U.S. military will make sure the Afghans can handle the job...

According to US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta on December14, 'we are winning this very tough conflict here in Afghanistan.' Well, he and his followers might imagine they are winning their war, but in addition to Washington s sacrifice of 1856 American soldiers (so far) in a futile conflict, what the geniuses of the Pentagon and the aid industry have also lost in their ten years of war is a very great deal of US taxpayers? money. And they intend to waste much more in years to come...

Afghanistan Chronicles, Part 3: Children of Terror
Jim Burroughs and Mary Ann Skweres, Truthout: 'The long-term effect on Afghanistan was that, by the time the Soviets finally left the country in 1989, these children had grown up into young adults whose only knowledge of the world was of war, and whose mandate was to set up an extremist Islamic state friendly to Pakistan. They returned to a country still strewn with land mines, where the rural infrastructure had been destroyed and the only jobs to be had were fighting a civil war for one power-hungry commander or another. These motherless boys, taught fundamentalist Islam and trained in the art of war, became the Taliban - warriors with extreme religious convictions, lead by the young, uneducated, but charismatic Mullah Omar, who had earned a reputation for bringing raping and murdering commanders to harsh justice.'

Stop the War on Christmas: Cease Fire in Afghanistan
Robert Naiman, Truthout: 'The Christmas truce has a rich history ? In December 1914, as war raged in Europe, Pope Benedict XV called for a Christmas cease-fire ? In one of the most compelling acts of mass civil disobedience in the 20th century, rank-and-file troops carried out the action that the Pope had called for, negotiating local Christmas cease-fires on the Western Front?. Maybe, if we get busy, by Christmas 2014, the guns in Afghanistan will be silenced for good.'
