Yemeni military officials said Saturday that two U.S. airstrikes killed at least 18 al-Qaida-linked militants in an evening attack on a central province that had been partly overrun by the group earlier this year. U.S. Central Command spokesman, Army Maj. T.G. Taylor, declined to comment on any American role in the strikes.

Remote-commanded unmanned US warplanes, so-called drones, targeted alleged al-Qaeda bases in south Yemen, in the city of Zinjibar, killing at least 30 people and wounding dozens of others. According to eyewitnesses, not only alleged bases were targeted, but US missiles were launched also against vehicles driving through the city centre.
