Congressional Republicans so far have been adamant that reductions in the projected spending assumed in the federal budget baseline for projected continuing military activities in Afghanistan must not be used to offset the cost of anything. In an era of unrestrained federal spending and debt, one of the most ludicrous arguments made by statists is that reducing the military budget would be harmful to the economy. Their suggestion is that military spending is beneficial to the economy -- that it creates jobs. Reducing military spending, they say, would result in laying off troops and downsizing of firms that supply uniforms, guns, etc. to the military...

Republicans won the 2010 House elections by pledging deficit reductions and smaller government. Were they serious? After all, they undermine their own argument by refusing to make cuts in Defense Spending. This diminishes their credibility. And if we pretend they are serious about reducing the deficit, we can also see that their hard line on defense weakens their negotiating position...
