The Elephant in the Room: The Police and the Occupy Movement

Collin Harris, Truthout: ''As the global wave of rebellion began in 2011 and eventually spread to the beating heart of empire and the new subcultures of resistance it spawned continue to grow and diversify, there is an obvious dilemma that will have to be worked out if we are serious about changing American society in any meaningful way. Of the many obstacles facing what, from our current vantage point, looks to be the only light shining on the dark and blotted American social-scape, a militarized police force stands out for its menacing and ubiquitous presence in American social life?. We turn to author and activist Kristian Williams for his insights on the historical development of the modern police force, its role in enforcing social inequality, and the evolution of police tactics in response to successive waves of popular insurgency and rebellion.''

The Aftermath of Occupy Will Surpass the Gains of 1960s Activism

Bill Zimmerman, Truthout: ''A new movement is being born. Jobless young troublemakers being thrown away by society understand that the extreme disparities in wealth and power that are the cause of their problems will not disappear on their own. Behind these young people will be millions of dissatisfied workers pursuing the American dream denied. That is why the coming era of citizen activism is likely to dwarf what my generation accomplished in the 1960s. We altered the country, culturally, socially, sexually and spiritually. The next wave of activism will change it economically.''
