In a strange kind of delayed response, the American public seems to be in a more Islamaphobic mood now than it was right after 9/11, when a few Muslim terrorists transformed planes into bombs. Symptoms are everywhere, from widespread opposition to the building of mosques and other Islamic institutions, to congressional hearings amplifying fearful, anti-Islamic voices, to Muslim-oriented surveillance policies, to the use of agent provocateurs to entrap hapless malcontents. Suppose that our act of war in Libya is perfectly legal. This is to overlook the absence of congressional authorization, a clear violation of the US Constitution, but let?s leave that aside for now. If our war in Libya is legal does that make this war prudent, effective, benevolent, worthwhile? Does the legality of this war imply a moral obligation to wage it? A little reflection shows that legality in itself is never enough to justify any action...
