Violence has escalated in Iraq at a rate not seen since 2008 when the final Strategic Framework and Security Agreement between Bush and Maliki was signed. Nearly 6,000 Iraqis were killed since the beginning of the year, 490 in October, as of Sunday. Sectarian violence on both sides is washing over Iraqi towns and cities like an epidemic, including the North, where Kurdistan had once been known as the safest place in Iraq. Washington, which for years claimed the invasion, in part, was to foster a democratic ally in the region, has been curiously silent on why this is happening and what it means for Iraq, with much of the mainstream news following suit...

Bezahlbare Mieten statt Rendite

''Die Mieten in der Bundesrepublik werden immer teurer. In München und in den meisten Großstädten müssen bei Neuvermietungen im Bestand inzwischen 14 bis 15 EUR Nettokaltmiete bezahlt werden. Beim Erstbezug im Neubau kostet die Nettokaltmiete gar 16 EUR und mehr. Dazu kommen noch die Betriebs- oder Nebenkosten, die z.B. in München bei durchschnittlich 1,60 EUR pro qm liegen. Die Miete für eine 80 qm Wohnung kostet so etwa 1200,- bis 1400,- EUR, ohne Heizungs- und Stromkosten. Normalverdienende Familien müssen inzwischen ein Drittel oder die Hälfte ihres Nettoeinkommens für die Miete ausgeben. Zu den höchsten Mietpreissteigerungen in den letzten vier Jahren kam es in Hamburg mit plus 25,9 %, in Berlin (plus 25,4 %), oder auch in Freiburg (plus 21,4 %) oder Weimar (plus 20 %). In einigen Regionen stehen Hunderttausende Wohnungen leer, im ganzen Land rund 3,5 Millionen. Aber die Wohnungen liegen dort, wo keine gebraucht werden, weil die Menschen keine Arbeit finden und deshalb wegziehen. Jetzt ist Wahlkampfzeit und alle Parteien, die die derzeitigen investorenfreundlichen Mietergesetze beschlossen haben, versprechen plötzlich die Einführung von ''Mietpreisbremsen''. Grundlegende Änderungen, die der Wohnungs- und Grundstücksspekulation einen Riegel vorschieben würden, sind von ihnen allerdings nicht zu erwarten. Im folgenden Beitrag geht es nicht um Reparaturmaßnahmen des kapitalistischen Wohnungsmarktes, sondern um die Ursachen der ungebremsten Mietpreisspirale und darum, daraus die notwendigen Schlussfolgerungen zu ziehen, die eine soziale Wohnungspolitik ermöglichen würden?'' Hartz IV reicht nicht für die Miete

Im letzten Jahr mussten Haushalte, die auf Hartz IV-Leistungen angewiesen sind, rund 630 Millionen Euro für die Unterkunftskosten von den Regelleistungen zahlen. An sich sollen die Kosten der Unterkunft (KdU) durch die Kommunen und Städte gezahlt werden. Weil aber die vorgegebenen Sätze nicht ausreichend sind, müssen vielerorts Hartz IV Bezieher zusätzliche Zahlungen leisten...
