The End Is Near
David Swanson, War Is a Crime: ''Apocalypse has been given a bad name?. But our species is living beyond its means. If we continue down this path, the planet, our food supplies, our climate, and life as we know it will collapse. If we bring population growth, consumption, and pollution under control, the damage already set in motion will play out for centuries, but complete catastrophe will likely be averted.''

As the West Burns: Speaking Truth to Fire
Dr. Brian Moench, Truthout: ''During the first week of July, referring to current raging wildfires, Princeton climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said, 'What we're seeing is a window into what global warming really looks like. It looks like heat; it looks like fires; it looks like this kind of environmental disaster.' Up close, it looked scary as hell. Most Utah residents will probably be inhaling wildfire smoke until the fall, and not just this summer, but most summers from now on.''

California s Ethnic Minorities Want State to Act Now on Global Warming
Rene Ciria-Cruz, New America Media: ''While nearly half of all adults view air pollution as a serious health threat, ethnic minorities showed the most concern over air pollution and are most aware that the health threat is more serious in lower-income areas than in other areas.''

Extreme weather
There is strong evidence that extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, droughts and heat waves, are increasing because of climate change.

The deep Greenland Sea is warming faster than the World Ocean
Recent warming of the Greenland Sea Deep Water is about ten times higher than warming rates estimated for the global ocean. Scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research recently published these findings in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. For their study, they analysed temperature data from 1950 to 2010 in the abyssal Greenland Sea, which is an ocean area located just to the south of the Arctic Ocean.

Study links heat waves to warming of planet
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
08/07/12
The percentage of the earth s land surface covered by extreme heat in summer has soared in recent decades, from less than 1 percent in the years before 1980 to as much as 13 percent in recent years, according to a new scientific paper. The change is so drastic, the paper says, that scientists can claim with near certainty that events such as the Texas heat wave last year, the Russian heat wave of 2010 and the European heat wave of 2003 would not have happened without the planetary warming caused by human release of greenhouse gases...
