Ex-commander: US started Afghan war lacking info
Pasadena Star-News

10/06/11

The U.S. began the war in Afghanistan with a 'frighteningly simplistic' view of the country, and even 10 years later lacks knowledge that could help bring the conflict to a successful end, a former top commander said Thursday. Retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal said in remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations that the U.S. and its NATO allies are only 'a little better than' 50 percent of the way to reaching their war goals.'

The ten-year war

Independent Institute
by Anthony Gregory

10/05/11

Ten years ago this Friday, the United States invaded Afghanistan. Why? To destroy the Taliban and bring democracy, we were told. The Taliban is still there. Democracy in a meaningful sense is not. And although al Qaeda is virtually absent, the fighting there rages on...

When people are panicked and desperate and no one seems to know what to do, that is the ideal time to push through their wish list of pro-corporate policies: privatizing education and social security, slashing public services, getting rid of the last constraints on corporate power.

Got Class Warfare? The Whole World Is Watching

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: 'Class warfare has once again entered the vocabulary of mainstream national politics, but this time with a strange twist. Right-wing politicians such as Paul Ryan and various high-profile conservative media pundits and corporate-funded think-tank spokespersons have made visible what ruling classes have long tried to bury beneath the discourse of meritocracy and the myth of the classless society - that is, the harsh consequences of class power, hierarchical rule and savage inequality.'

On the Ground Report From Day 19: 'The Whole World Is Watching!' Shouts Occupy Wall Street

Paul Mutter, Truthout: 'Wednesday, October 5 constituted the largest mass action so far in support of the Occupy Wall Street activists who have established a base camp in Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan. The evening march, which counted as many as 10,000-20,000 participants, included many new supporters and a large number of union workers from National Nurses United, the Transport Workers Union, Services Workers International Union, the Teamsters as well as the city s teachers' and public service employees' unions, among others.'

What Role for Labor in the Progressive Uprising? A Conversation With Stephen Lerner

Amy Dean, Truthout: 'No force did more to build the American middle class than organized labor. In recent decades, however, unions have been decimated. Despite concerted efforts to turn the tide, the movement now represents only 7 percent of workers in the private sector. Never have working people in this country been more in need of a collective voice. Yet, we must ask, can labor alone create the change we need? If it can t do it by itself, what role can unions play in supporting a wider progressive uprising?

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: 'Follow the money: If Greece goes down, investors start fleeing Ireland, Spain, Italy, and Portugal as well. All of this sends big French and German banks reeling. If one of these banks collapses, or show signs of major strain, Wall Street is in big trouble.'

New Restrictive Voting Rules Could Hurt Five Million Americans

Jorge Rivas, ColorLines: 'A new study from the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU puts forth an ominous prediction: five million voters could be affected by the deluge of restrictive voting laws that have swept the country in recent years. The report finds that the voters are from traditionally Democratic demographics and could be kept away from the polling booths in 2012. Importantly, the sheer number of voters who could be impacted is larger than the margin of victory in two of the last three presidential elections.'

Watch Your Health and Your Pocketbook: A Bipartisan Scheme for Regulatory Deform

Gerald Epstein, TripleCrisis: 'Right wing politicians in the U.S. have gotten very good at channeling George Orwell: As the world economy teeters on the brink of another economic catastrophe whose precipitating cause was a twenty year project to de-regulate finance in the U.S. and abroad, they insist that the cause of our woes is 'job killing' regulations. Never mind that, according to the World Bank, the U.S. ranks 5th in the world in terms of ease of doing business in relation to regulations, and that over the past 5 years, doing business in the U.S. overall has become easier, not harder. The same report shows that in the OECD the ease of doing business has stayed the same or improved since 2006. Yet in the OECD countries 50% more people were unemployed in 2010 than in 2007.'
