International Court of Justice: The Lakotas Last Stand

Jason Coppola, Truthout: 'On March 28, President Obama, in his address to the nation concerning events in Libya, declared, 'Wherever people long to be free, they will find a friend in the United States.' Here at home, it's been a different story. The violations of the treaties threaten the very way of life of the Lakota as uranium mining runoff poisons their land and water with radioactive waste and they continue their fight to live according to their 'traditional value system in rejection of a colonized world view,' says Sicangu Lakota linguist and lifelong activist Rosalie Little Thunder.'

The morality of fractional reserve banking

EconLog
by Bryan Caplan

One of Murray Rothbard s strangest doctrines is that fractional reserve banking (i.e. virtually all banking with which First World consumers have any direct experience) is inherently fraudulent and should therefore be illegal...

It is time to leave Afghanistan

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

05/12/11

When the United States launched its post-September 11 military actions against Afghanistan, the George W. Bush administration issued to the Taliban a set of demands. The Taliban refused to comply, so we went to war. The conventional wisdom has been that the war isn t going well, but the death last week of Osama bin Laden is just the latest and most definitive sign that it s a war we have actually already won...

The bin Laden dividend

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

05/12/11

Numerous people have argued that one potential benefit from the death of Osama bin Laden is that it will enable the U.S. Government to diminish its war commitments in that part of the world and finally arrest the steady erosion of civil liberties perpetrated in the name of the War on Terror (as though any of that is the government s goal). By contrast, I have argued from the start that the bin Laden killing is likely to change nothing of any significance ...

Some Final Thoughts on the Death of Osama bin Laden

Michael Moore, Michael Moore s Blog: 'We did exactly what bin Laden said he wanted us to do: Give up our freedoms (like the freedom to be assumed innocent until proven guilty), engage our military in Muslim countries so that we will be hated by Muslims and wipe ourselves out financially in doing so. Done, done and done, Osama. You had our number. You somehow knew we would eagerly give up our constitutional rights and become more like the authoritarian state you dreamed of. You knew we would exhaust our military and willingly go into more debt in eight years than we had accumulated in the previous 200 years combined.... If we really want to send bin Laden not just to his death, but also to his defeat, may I suggest that we reverse all of that right now.'

The Patriot Act is at war with the Constitution

Campaign For Liberty
by Bruce Fein

05/12/11

The 342-page USA Patriot Act passed without inquiry into whether arming the government with muscular investigatory tools justified the corresponding intrusions on the right to be left alone -- the right most valued by civilized people. The Patriot Act was portrayed as a necessary defense against foreign agents and international terrorists. Citizen liberties were relegated to extras in a Cecil B. De Mille cinematic extravaganza...

Time to let the housing bubble burst

Adam Smith Institute
by Sam Bowman

05/12/11

Like most other bubbles, it is a product of sustained government policies designed to privilege a special interest group - in this case, homeowners. Government after government has tried to keep the bubble inflated to avoid their wrath. The more people throw their life?s savings into housing, the more the pressure on government grows to protect these investments. The consequences for the rest of the country have been ruinous: increased cost of rents, urban sprawl, inflation and a shortage of affordable homes...

Remember Iraq?

The reality is that empires never dissolve themselves: they hang on to the bitter end, living on dreams of past glory and stubbornly refusing to see the signs of decline that are obvious to any objective observer. Pakistan: US intensifies drone aircraft attacks

Vancouver Sun [Canada]

05/12/11

A U.S. drone aircraft fired missiles at militants in Pakistan Thursday, killing eight of them, Pakistani officials said, as American officials vowed to press forward with such attacks after U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden in his Pakistani hideout. The third such strike since bin Laden s killing on May 2 indicated an intensification of the attacks compared with the weeks before the al-Qaida chief was shot dead in the U.S. raid on a compound in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad...

Abschalten! Anti-Atom-Proteste gehen weiter

Mai in Berlin.
