Death of Osama bin Laden Makes Peace Groups Ask: 'What's Next?'
James Russell, Truthout: 'On the phone from Chicago, Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of the peace group Voices for Creative Nonviolence (VCNV), paused and breathed deeply before answering the question about her initial thoughts on Bin Laden's death. After a few reflective moments, she said she wondered if his death, 'will signal the end of warfare in Afghanistan.' Her hope soon faded as President Obama made his announcement about Bin Laden's death on Sunday night. To Kelly, the disappointment came when Obama did not use his announcement as 'a teachable moment.' Instead of invoking the pacifism and restraint urged during the Vietnam War by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 'Obama presented the death as a victory for American exceptionalism,' she said.'

Filling in the Gaping Holes in WikiLeaks' Guantanamo Detainee Files
Jason Leopold, Truthout: 'Imagine that the more than 700 Guantanamo files released two weeks ago by WikiLeaks contained information explaining how interrogators obtained 'intelligence' from 'war on terror' detainees captured or sold to US forces after 9/11, such as this firsthand account: 'On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food or water. Most times they had urinated or defecated on themselves and had been left there for 18, 24 hours or more.'

Pakistan: Army warns US not to stage more raids
05/05/11
Pakistan s army broke its silence Thursday over the U.S. commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden, acknowledging its own 'shortcomings' in efforts to find the al-Qaida leader but threatening to review cooperation with Washington if there is another similar violation of Pakistani sovereignty. The tough-sounding statement was a sign of the anger in the army...

If, as American presidents have never tired of claiming, al Qaeda attacked us because 'they hate us for our freedoms,' they must like us a whole lot more now. If al Qaeda is really fighting us because they hate our freedoms, the war is already over...

The death of Osama bin Laden
Liberty For All
by Michael Badnarik

Thomas Jefferson said, 'I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.' After watching the reaction of countless Americans to the news that Osama Bin Laden was successfully assassinated, I remain mildly nauseous. Not since the Carter administration have I been so embarrassed of my country. In spite of our technological superiority, we are nothing more than a third world country, filled with unsophisticated xenophobes...

Why I don t feel much about Osama s death
CounterPunch
by Gary Leupp
But when I see crowds of Americans waving the flag, singing patriotic songs, and chanting 'USA! USA!' I feel a little nauseated. How can anyone aware of what the U.S. is doing in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen and Libya feel nationalistic pride at this moment in history?

Ability to kill OBL doesn t make America great
In These Times
by Kai Wright

Osama bin Laden, evil incarnate, has justified so, so much American violence in the 21st century. We have launched two wars and executed God knows how many covert military operations in the ethereal, never-ending fight he personifies. We have made racial profiling of Muslim Americans normative, turned an already broken immigration system into an arm of national defense, and reversed decades worth of hard-won civil liberties while pursuing him, dead or alive. We have abandoned even the conceit of respect for human rights in places stretching from Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo Bay in the course of hunting him down. Now, finally, the devil is dead...

Osama bin Laden and the 9/11 exception
The Partial Observer
by James Leroy Wilson
05/05/11
Just as G.W. Bush led many Americans to applaud the use of torture, so now Obama has made the disturbing, covert use of the Presidential Death Squad mainstream. The most amazing aspect of this is how, in the post-9/11 world, so many are willing to believe the President (whoever he is) on issues of 'national security' and terrorism. They will claim the President is personally unethical and lies all the time, but, when a 'national security' incident related to 9/11 comes up, they will believe the President s claims. I don t recall this before 9/11...
