Black Legislators on Frontline Against Arizona-Style Immigration Bills

Marcelo Ballve, New America Media: 'As immigrant advocates battle hardline immigration bills in state capitols across the country, they are receiving crucial support from caucuses of black legislators. Black politicians have come out in defense of immigrants, questioning the morality and wisdom of tough immigration legislation in states from Nebraska to Georgia, where 'copycat bills' are being modeled on Arizona s immigration enforcement legislation, SB 1070.'

The Verdict: Guilty of Protesting the Drones

John Dear, Truthout: 'Guilty! My friends and I have tried every legal means possible to stop our government from its terrorist, drone bombing attacks on civilians in Afghanistan, and so we journeyed to the drone headquarters at Creech AFB near Las Vegas on Holy Thursday to kneel in prayer and beg for an end to the bombings. This nonviolent intervention is determined to be criminal - not the regular drone bombing attacks on children in Afghanistan and Pakistan.'

Surprise, Surprise: Iraq War Was About Oil

Ray McGovern, Consortium News: 'Afghanistan may be the graveyard of empires, but Iraq is home to a graveyard sense of humor. Iraqis wonder aloud whether the U.S. and Britain would have invaded Iraq if its main export had been cabbages instead of oil. However obvious the answer, a remarkable array of American pundits and pseudo-savants have resisted giving the oil factor any pride of place among the motives behind the U.S./U.K. decision to invade Iraq in 2003. To this day, the Fawning Corporate Media (FCM) continues to play its accustomed role as government accomplice suppressing unwelcome news.'

Is It Fear of Uprisings or Altruistic Punishment?

Antonia Darder, Truthout: 'As the uprisings are spreading around the world and in the United States, there are many who feel fear, reticence and intense skittishness about what is transpiring. Yet, this anxiety, rather than surprising, is well cultivated by the contemporary hegemonic forces that govern our lives. What is most important for us to understand is that we, as a people, are most conditioned to fear when populations reclaim their social agency and collective power and rise up against the unjust policies of the state.'

Pay Up Now, Corporations: We are Organized, Aware of Your Tax Havens and Ready to Boycott

Paul Bucheit, Truthout: 'PayUpNow.org is an online effort to 'uncut' the cutbacks by promoting boycotts of corporations who pay little or no federal income tax... Some of the worst offenders include General Electric (GE), which had $10 billion in profits and received a tax rebate; Bank of America, whose financial statements, according to a Bloomberg report, were 'so delusional that they invite laughter'; oil giant Exxon, which paid no US taxes; and Citigroup, with an astounding 427 foreign tax havens.'

Pakistan-US Feud Boils Over CIA Drone Strikes

Jonathan S. Landay, McClatchy Newspapers: 'Pakistan s contradictory positions on the strikes illustrate how the Pakistani army is trying to use public outrage in Pakistan over what are denounced as violations of national sovereignty. The Obama administration, however, is insisting that the Pakistani military accede to a longstanding U.S. demand to move against militant groups that control North Waziristan, which is Osama bin Laden s suspected refuge, and that they use as a base for attacking Afghanistan.'

Congress: Teaching New Dogs Old Tricks

Michael Winship, Truthout: 'For all their talk of the Founding Fathers, the Constitution and core principles, you d have thought that the current freshman class of Congress, the sprouted seed of Tea Partiers and the 2010 midterms, would have made a similar tour their first priority on arrival... But for some, the siren song of cash and influence has proven stronger, already luring them onto the rocks of privilege and corruption that lurk just inside the Beltway. They?ve made a beeline not for the hallowed shrines of patriots? pride but the elegant suites of K Street lobbyists, where the closest its residents have been to Lincoln is the bearded face peering from the five-dollar bill - chump change.'

http://sonnenseite.kjm4.de/ref.php?id=d87416811930ms258

http://sonnenseite.kjm4.de/ref.php?id=d87416811892ms258

http://sonnenseite.kjm4.de/ref.php?id=d87416811908ms258

http://sonnenseite.kjm4.de/ref.php?id=d87416811935ms258
