Interior to Lease More Wyoming Coal; Michigans Unfinished Oil Spill Clean-Up

Sarah Laskow, The Media Consortium: "The renewable era is still far away. Despite the attention and rhetoric that has been given over to green energy projects, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced this week that coal companies would be able to take a whack at mining 2.35 billion tons of coal in Wyomings Powder River Basin. A new oil slick appeared off the coast of Louisiana. And Japanese authorities warned Tokyo residents that the citys water contained levels of radioactive material unsafe for infants to consume.'

Continuing Colonialism: World Bank Funds Mining in Africa

Cyril Mychalejko, Toward Freedom: "The private finance sector arm of the World Bank Group announced last month that it would invest $300 million to promote mining in Africa. 'Mining is a critically important yet challenging sector and [the International Finance Corporation] IFC has a role to play in supporting responsible companies that will bring jobs, related infrastructure and government revenues to Africa,' said Andrew Gunther, IFC's Senior Manager of Infrastructure and Natural Resources in Africa and Latin America.'

Farmers Sue USDA Over Monsanto Alfalfa, Again

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: 'A coalition of farmers and environmental groups filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on March 18 to challenge the agencys recent decision to fully deregulate Monsantos Roundup Ready alfalfa. This is the second time the USDA has been sued over its approval of Roundup Ready alfalfa, which is genetically engineered (GE) to tolerate glyphosate, a popular herbicide commonly sold under the Monsanto brand name Roundup. The latest lawsuit, filed by groups like the Center for Food Safety (CFS) and the National Family Farm Coalition, opens a new chapter in the five-year battle over the GE alfalfa seed developed by Monsanto and Forage Genetics.'

Farmworkers Take to the Streets for New Gains

Yana Kunichoff, Truthout: 'The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), an organization fighting for the rights of farmworkers in the large agricultural community of Southern Florida, has launched its first major mobilization in the Northeast to pressure the food retailers Ahold and Publix to address human rights violations in their production supply chain. A bus full of farmworkers, students, religious leaders and consumers held their first rally in Boston in late February and continued their corporate accountability actions aimed at the large supermarkets with a week-long tour of the East Coast.'

Radiation: Nothing to See Here?

Brian Moench MD, Truthout: 'Administration spokespeople continuously claim 'no threat' from the radiation reaching the US from Japan, just as they did with oil hemorrhaging into the Gulf. Perhaps we should all whistle 'Dont worry, be happy' in unison. A thorough review of the science, however, begs a second opinion. That the radiation is being released 5,000 miles away isnt as comforting as it seems. The Japanese reactors hold about 1,000 times more radiation than the bombs dropped over Hiroshima.'

The Green Justice Coalition, Helping Labor and the Environment

Amy Dean, Truthout: 'According to Republican governors in places such as Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana, our states are in crisis and the only solution is to squeeze middle-class employees. Unions, in their view, are part of the problem. And if you point out that their attempts to seize power in the name of balancing budgets do little, if anything, to solve the real economic problems we face, they will insist that there is no alternative.'

Buried Provision in House GOP Bill Would Cut Off Food Stamps to Entire Families if One Member Strikes

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'All around the country, right-wing legislators are asking middle class Americans to pay for budget deficits caused mainly by a recession caused by Wall Street; they are attacking workers' collective bargaining rights, which has provoked a huge Main Street Movement to fight back. Now, a group of House Republicans is launching a new stealth attack against union workers. GOP Reps. Jim Jordan (OH), Tim Scott (SC), Scott Garrett (NJ), Dan Burton (IN), and Louie Gohmert (TX) have introduced H.R. 1135, which states that it is designed to 'provide information on total spending on means-tested welfare programs, to provide additional work requirements, and to provide an overall spending limit on means-tested welfare programs.'

From Memphis to Madison: The April 4 Stand for Economic Justice

Isaiah J. Poole, Campaign For America's Future: 'On April 4, we will be called on not to merely remember that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on that day in 1968, but to recall what he was about to do on the day he was shot - and why the mission he was on that day very much matters to the struggle of working people (and those who want to become working people) today. King was in Memphis to support sanitation workers who were caught in a struggle with the city's mayor that was very similar to the battle that public employees in Wisconsin were fighting with Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans in the state legislature.'

Class Warfare Scoreboard: Guess Whos Winning?

Obamas fatal attraction to war

Reason Reason
by Steve Chapman

03/24/11

In 2008, we saw debates between Obama and his rival contenders. Now we are seeing a debate between Obama the candidate and Obama the president. Candidate Obama was firm in his opposition to the Iraq war. President Obama was against going into Libya before he was in favor of it. The former said the president may not legally strike a country that hasnt attacked or presented a threat to us. The latter bombed a country that had done neither. Obamas defenders insist that what he did in starting the Libya war is not as bad as what President George W. Bush did in starting the Iraq war. True: In some ways, what Obama did is worse...
