Peter King: Reactionary, Rash and Wrong
Matthew Harwood, Truthout: 'Rep. Peter King (R-New York) is a tough guy - the kind of man you call on to do distasteful, but necessary things. In his first hearing since regaining the chairmanship of the House Homeland Security Committee, King publicly reaffirmed his intention to hold hearings into the extent of jihadist radicalization inside the Muslim-American community. Since King made his intention known late last year, Muslim-American groups have been outraged at his insinuation that their community represents a disproportionate terrorist threat inside the United States or his contention that they are somehow reluctant to cooperate with law enforcement to protect the country from further jihadist attacks.'

The Revolution of Hope Is Changing the Way Americans Look at Islam
James Carroll, TomDispatch: 'Since 2001, Americans have been living with a nightmare Arab, a Muslim monster threatening us to the core, chilling our souls with the cry, 'God is great!' Yet after two months of world-historic protest and rebellion in streets and squares across the Arab world, we are finally waking up to another reality: that this was our bad dream, significantly a creation of our own fevered imaginations. For years, vestigial colonial contempt for Arabs combined with rank prejudice against the Islamic religion, exacerbated by an obsession with oil, proved a blinding combination. Then 9/11 pulled its shroud across the sun. But like the night yielding to dawn, all of this now appears in a new light. Americans are seeing Arabs and Muslims as if for the first time, and we are, despite ourselves, impressed and moved. In this regard, too, the Arab revolution has been, well, revolutionary.'

The Hooey King
Eugene Robinson: 'There is nothing radical or un-American in holding these hearings,' Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., claimed Thursday, as he launched his McCarthyite probe of American Muslims. He could not have been more wrong. If King is looking for threats to our freedoms and values, a mirror would be the place to start.'

A Cautionary Tale, a Tale of Resistance
Eleanor J. Bader, Truthout: 'Several months back, when Rep. Peter King (R-New York) announced plans to hold Congressional hearings on the 'radicalization of the American Muslim community and the threat of homegrown terrorists,' progressive pundits and activists dubbed the plan a return to McCarthy-like witch hunts. But King, chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, shook off the criticism. This surprised no one. After all, the Council on American-Islamic Relations reports that in the world-according-to-King, '85 percent of American Muslim community leaders are an enemy living among us.' What's more, the group quotes him saying, in 2007, 'We have too many mosques in this country.'

The least intriguing aspect of Republican Rep. Peter Kings congressional hearing this week on terrorism and the 'radicalization in the American Muslim community' is the spectacle?s obvious hypocrisy. King was himself a cheerleader of a terrorist group (the Irish Republican Army), and his hearings ignore new government statistics showing that since 9/11, right-wing and white supremacist terrorist plots have outnumbered those of Muslims...

[H]earing any serious cost/benefit analysis about our current foreign policy is about as likely to happen as Washington leaders addressing and correcting our reckless domestic policy of trillion dollar deficits and debt. It is simply assumed that the status quo, whatever it may be, is somehow beneficial and necessary by its own volition. Or perhaps worse, politicians fear that the many special interests involved could potentially be jeopardized by any substantive examination of the way Washington conducts its business. This characteristic intellectual laziness among the political class is particularly troubling when it comes to the threat of terrorism, domestic or otherwise...

When David Horowitz starts throwing around the label 'neoconservative' as if it were a four-letter word, you know a real schism is at hand. Thats because right-wing jihad hunters like Horowitz, Caroline Glick and others are reaching levels of near hysteria over the prospect of Islamic movements gaining political power in a post-revolution Middle East, particularly right now in Egypt. Sure, they believe everyone has the inalienable right to freedom, but not if they live on 'hostile soil' or when it is not in Americas 'core regional interests'...
