Smart meters: an IT disaster waiting to happen?
Everything has to be prefixed with the word *smart* these days smart phones, smart cities, smart meters, when really what is meant by the word is that something is not necessarily better, or smarter, but just connected.
While traditional meters are expected to last for between 25 and 35 years, ZigBee standards today don t work with ZigBee standards of just four years ago.

Smart meters are surprisingly stupid
My concern is the failure of customer service to realize that something was wrong. Had the Bakers paid the bill, it would not surprise me if Hydro One decided to take the word of the machine over common sense.

*The smart meter is a canard, a story or a hoax based on specious and grandiose claims about energy benefits ostensibly derived from the promise of *two-way? communication with the customer? There is essentially no possibility that most smart meters or meter networks will lead to greater sustainability.* Dr. Timothy Schoechle, *Getting Smarter About The Smart Grid*.

Video of Smart Meter Hearing
This was a zoning board hearing in Worcester, MA. We have delayed the installation of the Wimax tower 8 times now. The utility bumbles for the first 30 minutes, then comments. We learned after the fact that the doors to City Hall were locked and people who tried to attend could not get in the door. We made an effort to coordinate the statements so that many points were introduced. Four city counselors spoke in support of the community. The National Grid pilot is an undisclosed WiMax pilot. Several residents will be speaking at the Worcester City Council meeting Tuesday night Jan 21, at 7:00 pm. All are welcomed.

How Stupid, Complicated and Expensive Can Ontario Electrical Billing Be?
The MDM/R serves more than 70 local distribution companies, handling reads from over four million meters, and processing over 100 million transactions per day.
As data sets have grown from hundreds of records to millions, and tables from millions of rows to hundreds of billions, many legacy software systems cannot scale...
http://www.smartmeters.com/the-news/4380-kx-systems-provides-ontario-smart-meter-processing.html
Ontario is providing a fine example to the world, of stupidity and *what not to do* to an electrical distribution system.
Even More Stupid: The USA Grid
In the United States alone, there are more than 46 million smart meters installed, according to the Institute for Electric Innovation
The Silicon Valley-based company this week will introduce software designed simplify the process of programming meters and sensors on the grid and capturing the huge amounts of data they produce.
As a company, it s trying to earn money by providing services, such as big data analytics, that make use of the existing infrastructure. *This giant network exists and it?s largely under-utilized,* Young says.
http://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/energy/the-smarter-grid/the-smart-grid-needs-an-app-store?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IeeeSpectrumFullText+(IEEE+Spectrum+Full+Text)
No mention in these *smart grid* stories about increased cancer, heart problems, depression and neurological problems or the law suits and criminal trials that are likely to occur eventually.
Security Still Seen as Major Concern: Smart Meters
In a new survey, 61 percent of energy executives polled say they consider security to be a significant problem for the smart grid, and nearly two-thirds believe that the grid is not prepared for security threats. However, only eight percent of utilities plan to invest more than $5 million in cyber security technologies over the next five years.

Unbelievable, these are the people who have pushed and bullied people to install smart meters, with no concern for very serious adverse heath effects, yet they know that they are weakening the entire electrical system!
Where did common sense, integrity and decency go? Don t they realise that they have a duty to ensure the system is safe and secure. A great many lives depend on electrical grids operating safely!
