Santa Fe Survey cites troubling rise in teen depression

Gervers is troubled by the increased numbers of students reporting bouts of depression and suicidal thoughts. ''That has gradually gone up, and we have seen an increase in referrals for same-day suicide assessment as well,'' she said.

Compounding matters there, she said, is the fact that a teen died by suicide last year in a public place. ''You have to say that it is a very serious problem,'' she said.
