Dear Minister Aglukkaq;
Over the last several years I have written to your office, both to you and your predecessors, with evidence that Health Canada is ignoring evidence that Safety Code 6, the guideline which is supposed to protect the public from radiation from wireless transmitters, is inadequate. In 2008 my husband and I wrote a comprehensive petition (#255) to the Auditor General with evidence of conflict of interest and bias both within Health Canada and its Royal Panel plus within WHO and ICNIRP whose guidelines Health Canada accepts. We showed that many people who decide the standards for exposure are affiliated with the very industry they are supposed to be monitoring.
In 2010 a group of us organized presentations by several world renowned, expert witnesses to the Parliamentary sub-committee on health (HESA). They testified that biological effects occur at exposure levels which are mere fractions of that allowed by Health Canada and that Safety Code 6 is totally inadequate. Canada s guideline is among the worst in the world.
All of this evidence has been consistently ignored by your office and Health Canada. You and Beth Pieterson continue to tell the public there is no evidence of harm, often referring to the WHO and ICNIRP as the source for your statements. Among other things, both of you have said that Safety Code 6 is safe and is among the best in the world. You and Health Canada consistently mislead the public.
Attached is only the latest report on the conflict of interest which is so pervasive in these agencies.
Ms. Aglukkaq, this is one more opportunity for you to do the right thing, what you are expected to do as Minister of Health. Demand that independent researchers, with absolutely no tie to industry, establish new biologically based exposure guidelines. Demand that Health Canada be cleansed of all those working there directly or indirectly, e.g. the Royal Panel, be devoid of any industry influence.
The public demands this and deserves no less.
Yours truly,
Sharon Noble

Reminder: Ahlbom and the tobacco
http://ec.europa.eu/health/ph_risk/committees/04_scenihr/docs/scenihr_mi_014.pdf
***Served until 1996 as a consultant to the tobacco industry.
'Prof. A. Ahlbom declared that for a few years, until 1996, he was a member of the Swedish Tobacco Company s Medical Research Council'
***Ahlbom was one of five professors who wrote in 2001 in a Swedish newspaper that PCB, phenoxyacetic acids and dioxins in Agent Orange probably do not pose risk of cancer, and the thought that cell phones might be able to cause brain tumors is 'biologically bizzare'. The tumors that prof Hardell had found in studies were 'with great probability, a random find'. (The Invisible Disease, by Gunni Nordstrom page 111). and also in:
http://www.bioelectromagnetics.org/newsletter/news162.pdf 'Experts who talk rubbish' page 4
*** Lately raised the EMF standard from 1000 mG to 2000 mG (MWN short takes Nov 2010) while 2-4 mG is possible carcinogen by IARC.
Is this not 'biologically bizzare'?...
Ahlbom is not alone: more conflicts of interests exposed by IARC
IARC presented more conflicts of interests of scientists who decide whether non ionizing radiation is carcinogenic or not. Who hold the keys of public knowledge is more influencial than the knowledge itself:
http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Meetings/vol102-participants.pdf
The below two calls demand a full disclosure of very apparent conflicts of interests, one of them replaces Anders Ahlbom who was just kicked from IARC's committee because of his conflicts of interest.
1) from The EMR Policy Institute, Inc. JNewton(at)emrpolicy.org
Jack Siemiatycki, University of Montreal, Canada replaces Anders Ahlbom. It seems he did not reveal his interests:
'This appointment [instead of prof Anders Ahlbom], if true, is also troubling given Professor Siemiatycki?s recent comments quoted in the May 20, 2011 National Post concerning the precautionary principle: 'It s an interesting question, but if we had applied it 2,000 years ago, we would still be in caves making fires by rubbing sticks together. At what point does the precautionary principle paralyze any technological development?'
EMR policy institute: 'Does Siemiatycki have a pre-conceived bias against the precautionary principle? Certainly such an expression does not garner public confidence that Siemiatycki has the objectivity or takes seriously the global public health issue of exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields - to chair the IARC epidemiological expert group. He is not an appropriate choice for chair."
2) From Sharon Noble dsnoble@shaw.ca
The second Canadian observer James McNamee, research scientist, Consumer & Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau, Health Canada, is the new EMR specialist on the editorial board of Radiation Research. He has published three negative papers on microwave genotoxicity in Radiation Research. McNamee also has written a review paper with prof John Moulder [industry consultant] on cell phones and cancer.
Vijayalaxmi, McNamee and Maria Scarfi, an Italian researcher, are authors on 14 of the 42 negative genotox papers. Ten of their 14 negative papers were published in Radiation Research. (Microwave News, July 31, 2006)
Dr. McNamee is on the Board of Directors for the Bioelectromagnetics Society, with his term ending 2008. ( http://www.bioelectromagnetics.org ) This Society?s newsletter is funded by Motorola, and its editor is Dr. Mays Swicord, director of EMR research for Motorola. (Microwave News, July 2004)
Let's clean house of all of them -- and there are so many. Feel free to quote me. The info about McNamee is from a petition my husband and I submitted to our auditor general charging health canada was filled with industry affiliated people. McNamee is just one. Our Royal Panel is filled with them, too.
Many thanks,
Sharon Noble
