The newest epidemiological study contains the same flaws as the INTERPHONE

From Adamantia Fragopoulou
Prof' Dariusz Leszczynski issued his criticism on the greek study on his blog. In his opinion on the blog ''The study in its current format should be not published''. But the people he tries to educate, do not know the lab methods he discusses and cannot judge his claims so it only creates confusion. Is the criticism valid, when the researchers themselves were not even given the opportunity to respond first? Is a private blog or the Washington Times the right place to run a scientific discussion? Today part of the criticism is published on the Washington Times pages. I bring below the response of the greek researchers, who were not even given the chance to response adequately before his piece was published today on the Washington Times pages. Will anybody stop this marathon of attacks? Judge for yourself.

We cannot understand why such important accusations were and still are circulating only through the blogs.
Why didn t Dr. Leszczysnki sent from the beginning an official letter to the Editor of EBM? Who has appointed Dr. Leszczysnki to be a judge of already peer-reviewed and published studies? Our study is showing for the first time brain protein expression alterations in a mammalian animal model after EMF exposure (cell phone and DECT base), changes that should be seriously taken into account by the scientific community. This study was very thoroughly designed and all co-authors are qualified with publications on the technical and scientific aspects of the article. Of course, more research on this topic is necessary to be done by other research groups as well.
All co-authors of the study agree that we will respond in more detail only by the scientifically correct way, through the editorial board of the journal.

The new nothing new cell phone radiation report

There are no studies proving that cell phone radiation affect humans in the first place?

Radiation Stuk does not support the requirement for mobile free schools. According Stuk is no reliable research on the relationship between mobile phones and health risks.
Kiviojan alakoulu Ylivieska since the beginning insisted that students turn off their cell phones during the school day. Another aim is the school's management that the children concentrate on school work, and also do not want to expose children to the health risks of mobile phones is believed to involve.
- Mobile ban is a completely exaggerated action. There are signs that mobile phone radiation causes biological changes of any kind, but we do not know if it damages your health in any way, says research professor Dariusz Leszczynski at Stuk.
Ph.D. Mikko Ahonen disagrees. According to him, there is already research showing that mobile phone radiation may be a contributing factor to sleep problems and behavioral disorders.
Although Stuk consider the health risks may be exaggerated, they recommend avoiding exposure to radiation unnecessarily. One trick might be to write text messages instead of making calls. (FNB)

Opinion
From Annie Sasco
Some of you asked for my opinion about the Fragopoulou et al. paper (
http://electromagnetichealth.org/electromagnetic-health-blog/mice-proteome/ ).
When I found it, I immediately send Adamantia a congratulation message. I met her more than a year ago at a meeting in Istanbul where she presented some of her work and I enjoyed it. So I was happy to see her work in print. I did not immediately comment because I am an MD epidemiologist and not a lab scientist. On the other hand I can no longer stand the attitude of lab scientists who are not epidemiologists, nor MDs but who nevertheless spend their time stating how bad epidemiology is.
EPIDEMIOLOGY IS THE ONLY SCIENCE WHICH CAN BRING THE FINAL PROOF IN HUMANS.
Then, as an MD I remind everyone everyday what Hippocrate wrote in the fourth century BC: ''primum non noccere'' or ''First do no harm''. The role of doctors, but also of scientists should be to use science as a way towards prevention. This is clearly not the case.
I have always been exceedingly in favour of animal experiments? Why? Because it is the most informative way to get information of health effects of new exposures in the fastest way. Persons may want to believe they are very different from mice but they are not! So, let us get back to the Fragopoulou study.
It is an animal observational study in controlled conditions of exposure to situations to which humans are now exposed to on a daily basis and at a world scale: a regular cell phone or a DECT base, just the ones most of the people have in their hands or their offices or homes.
What do they see? The functioning of the brain of mice is affected by exposure to EMF. I cannot judge the way they measured gene expression but I really liked their discussion and it made real sense to me. They cannot compare their results to preceding ones as none seems to have been published.
I trust that paper and I trust these scientists.
I would like to believe that if we could get more information on the mechanisms of carcinogenicity of EMF, we could convince politicians to act. But I am too old to really believe in that any longer. The main reason the issue of mechanisms has been introduced in the IARC Monographs has been to DOWNgrade evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals, almost never to UPgrade. It is just to say: ''Yes, there is something in animals, but ignore it as humans are different''.
We are not that different: what is bad for mice is never going to be good for humans but creating that doubt will allow the industry and all the so-called ''independent'' scientists working under cover to keep on exposing human populations for 20 or 50 more years before with long-term exposure and provided epidemiological studies are conducted and published, the final proof will come when epidemiologist will demonstrate an increased risk of cancer or any other disease in humans.
History keeps on repeating itself: tobacco, asbestos, benzene, DES, hormones, etc, etc, etc.
Our planet is being destroyed, willingly and knowingly, and with the planet, so are the animal and human populations.
We have to fight.
